Research shows that while all dogs, like their owners, have an individual music taste, the majority prefer soft rock and reggae to other genres of music – it lowers their heart rate and stress levels significantly compared to other genres, or to mashups of other genres.
Tests, which included heart rate monitoring and behavioural observation while playing many different genres of music, show that our canine companions don’t just mildly prefer reggae and soft rock – they love it!
As well as these two genres, the dogs also responded positively to pop, Motown and classical tracks. This diverse response suggests that, just like humans, dogs have an their own music taste and preferences.
In response to this, the Scottish Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals has introduced sound systems to its kennels, with a playlist that includes the favourites of man’s best friend.
